While granite is the most common material selection for kitchen countertops, other materials have gained popularity over the years.  Knowing more about how material will perform may assist you in your selection.

Granite - is the hardest of natural materials for kitchen countertop options.  In most cases, it offers resistance to staining, etching and scratches.  With today's material selections, the array of colors and patterns offer a wide variety of options.

Travertine & Limestone
 – is often used for bathroom vanities, hearths, mantles and fireplace surrounds.  The softer physical properties of these materials are generally not suited for kitchen applications.

Marble – is often seen in current kitchen designs, however will require a bit more maintenance than granite as it is more susceptible to staining, etching and scratches.  A Honed surface finish is often recommended for kitchen applications along with routine sealing.  Marble is commonly used for bathroom applications such as vanities, tub decks, shower shelves, walls and wall caps.

Soapstone - is gaining popularity in kitchen countertop applications yet will require additional care over time.  Typically the soapstone surface is oiled, enhancing the deep rich color and natural characteristics of the stone.  

Onyx – has truly some of the most beautiful color combinations in natural stone options.  It is not suitable for kitchen countertops, however often used for vanity tops, table insets, bars and other furniture that may incorporate unique lighting techniques.

Quartzite
 – is an extremely dense natural stone product, making it suitable for any interior application. 

Quartz Products – Engineered Stones – are manufactured “stone” slabs containing primarily natural crushed quartz, resins and dyes to create products uniform in color and resistant to scratching.
